Having had a large garden on the mainland, and I used Roundup every Spring, 2-3 weeks before planting, I have to disagree with the "findings" from a biased group.
I never had any issues with a lack of earthworms or ladybugs.

In addition, I used Roundup around my ornamental fish pond and had zero issues with dead fish. If anything, the darned fish ate and grew faster than I wanted them to. The toads and frogs also had no prob;ems with reproducing - and the fish loved the eggs and tadpoles.

I would be more concerned that people are bringing crickets - I assume they are an invasive species - into Hawaii.

There are already lots of crickets here. They even sell them at Stacy's. He's looking for less expensive crickets to feed his lizard. Maybe he can get his lizard to eat small coqui frogs? That would be useful!

I dunno if RoundUp is all that benign or not, but I don't use it much at all. I always like to wait about twenty or thirty years before believing when "they" decide things are harmless. Read history books and see things like lead pipes, lead powder in wigs, lead in pewter, etc. It took "them" a really long time to figure out lead was hazardous for some purpposes. Wasn't it DDT that used to be very common and now isn't available anymore? There are a lot of things that are out for quite some time before they are determined to be hazardous.

Yep. Heptachlor and chlordane are two pesticides that have a negative history in Hawaii. Now are both banned, but they were in use for years.

Thanks for the replies everyone! You can't have any live animals shipped to Hawaii, so ordering from Petco is out. They have crickets in Kona, but I am on the Hilo side and we don't get over there that often. I don't want to breed crickets, but my husband used to do it when he had bearded dragons and I might have him convinced to do it again. It would be useful if the chameleon could eat the coqui frogs!!
Guess I will keep going to Stacey's Pets unless my husband decides to breed them for me.

If someone could breed crickets that would eat coqui frogs we would all be happier.

Make a wire cage and put something stinky inside along with the chameleon. Flies will go to the stinky stuff and your lizard can feed himself.

You can order gut-loaded crickets in any size from Island Hoppers Plus on Maui. They ship to all islands. Even the largest crickets are more than half of the price of the local pet shops (Ten cents and less instead of twenty five) their number is 808 268-6358. Good luck!!

Default glyphosate

Aloha,

A new field of study is that of soil biota which has been grossly ignored over the years. There is very little known about the effects of soil bacteria and fungi on plants. But recent studies show that good bacteria may protect emerging seeds from bad bacteria. The seeds from plants grown is rich soil have a higher percentage of germination than seeds from the same species of plant grown in soil sprayed with glyphosate. So the protection is passed along somehow. Also, these fungi and bacteria help to break down soil particles into minerals that can be absorbed by plants roots. Basically, the plants you are trying to protect from weeds don't do well in soil sprayed with glyphosate. So it's presumed that glyphosate kills the soil fungi and bacteria as well as the weeds you are trying to kill.

Mahalo, Harry

Old thread, but definitely interesting info, Harry! I wouldn't use Round-Up here, that's for sure. I just don't trust Monsanto more than I can throw one of their fat-ass good ol' boy lobbyists.

In fact, our yard is a pesticide and herbicide-free zone. I even have a round metal plaque with a lady bug on it attached to our house, so other people know and hopefully follow suit :-).
