Renting a truck from Harpers and driving up to the summit.

Any one done this lately? Any things I should or should not do?

Thanks!

You should mention to Harpers that you are going to take the truck up to the summit, to find out if it is (1) allowed and if (2) that particular model is appropriate for the trip.

Although it's a little dated, here's a link to a PDF of a pamphlet entitled, "Driving Safely to the Summit of Mauna Kea"...

It's open range so the cows can be anywhere, including in the road. When the clouds/fog are heavy you can't see the cows very well.

For a while it was donkeys, too, on the roads in some areas. But thankfully people have been working hard on solving that so the donkeys are much more contained.

Actually, the guide to driving up to Mauna Kea that Harper's has on their website is pretty good.

4WD, Four Wheel Drive to the top of Mauna Kea, Mauna Kea Car Rentals, 4WD Rental

One thing I definitely recommend is to stop for a break at the Visitor's Center at the 9,000' level to allow your body to adjust to the altitude.
