Fortunately I've never needed repair on my laptop since I hit the Big Island a couple of years ago, but I did put together a list of local (Hilo) resources in the event of problems arising, and printed it out for emergency reference. So I can't vouch for any of these, although I've made a couple of small purchases at the first one and they seemed friendly and helpful. But it's a place to start:

The Computer Store, Inc., 261 Kekuanaoa St # C, Hilo, HI, (808) 969-1166

Super Geeks, 209 Kilauea Ave, Hilo, HI (808) 935-5000

Falcon Computers,190 Keawe St # 14, Hilo, HI, (808) 934-0020

Pacific Pro-Tech Services, 117 Keawe St # 104, Hilo, HI, (808) 935-8081

Hilo Computer Services Inc, 14 Pukihae Street, Hilo, HI, (808) 969-1101

E Tech Solutions, 166 Alae Street, Hilo, HI, (808) 896-3218

Amber's Computers, 688 Kinoole St # 217, Hilo, HI, (808) 969-9017

Planet Hawaiian, 961 Kilauea Avenue, Hilo, HI, (808) 959-6368

Applied Networks, 19 Mohouli Street, Hilo, HI, (808) 934-7761

Mac Made Easy, 249 Keawe Street, Hilo, HI, (808) 935-7505

Tropic Mac, 114 Haili Street, Hilo, HI, (808) 969-9221

It's very often cheaper to just buy a new one. That's why you keep all your files backed up, so you can just move everything over to a new machine.

I hope all you've got is a wire jarred loose, because laptops can be quite expensive to repaired.

Fingers crossed for you that it is something minor and easy to repair.

In my experience that is the #1 cause of laptop issues if they're dropped... a connection being jarred loose. Easily fixed, inexpensive. #2 is hard drive damage.

Fingers crossed it's #1

There is also Tui Tech over by the firestation by the Port of Hilo. He's got reasonable rates. I've also used Falcon computers up in Waimea.

If it's not under any warranty, the simplest thing to do is just crack it open yourself. More than likely a loose connecting ribbon. I've replaced the MB on a macbook or two, intimidating when you first look inside, but actually nothing to it. Websites have disassembly instructions, etc.. If that fails, I normally recommend a Number #3 lava rock at 10 paces.. It may not be pretty, but it does relieve that anti-computer angst.

Thanks all! Sorry I did not get back to reply sooner, I was trying to resurrect a desktop =P It's definitely the HD that went, because I slapped an older one in it and it boots right up. Really ticks me off that the warranty doesn't cover it seeing they have those commercials about their HD's being "shock resistant". =(

Unfortunately, the key word is shock resistant, as opposed to shock proof. Back in the late 1990s, I worked from home as a technical writer, and I had two Windows NT desktop computers networked together so I could test and write about networked applications. The computer gods got really angry at me one day: the hard drives in both computers crashed on the same day, for unrelated reasons. My files were backed up, but technology being as primitive as it was back then, it was like a puzzle figuring out how to get up and running again: to retrieve my files, I needed to access my Zip drive. To access my Zip drive, I needed a driver. To get the driver, I needed to get to the Iomega web site via my modem. To access my modem, I needed a driver. And so on. I eventually found the right combination and order of steps.
