You guys are terrific ! For those wanting to be even a little more anal; try googling: Photos of Viceroy and Monarch butterflies - they both look very similar and the Viceroy is smaller than the Monarch with some very subtle differences.

The butterfly photo is of a Gulf fritillary (Agraulis vanillae). The caterpillars eat passionvine. The second photo is a male Monarch (Danaus plexippus). The Monarch caterpillars feed on Crown Flower (Calotropis gigantea) as well as Tropical Milkweed (Asclepias curassavica). The Kamehameha butterfly (Vanessa tameamea) is much smaller than the Monarch. If I can figure out how to post photos I will post some of the butterflies I saw in Laie last October.

I like all insects and aracanids (sp minus 2 points ). Actually I love all God's Creations. I said that the fritillary eats passionvine in opening thread. It eats it without destroying the entire vine. A miracle there ! Butterflies are gentle creatures. Beautiful to watch and they do not destroy like certain moths do. Now the cockroach and the lobster, they are interesting and reproachful.

lately I have at least 6-10 gulf fritillaries hovering in my yard, I think they kinda like to hang out at the bush passion flower I have in my front yard. also it was a treat to see a couple of swallowtails in my street too:-) now Im so excited to plant more butterfly and bee friendly plants and flowers:-)

YardyMomma, you have a bush passion flower? Ours is on a vine and I didn't know that they grow on a bush. Do you know if they are similar fruits?

Yeah, just Google "Passion Flower Shrub." The vines are more common in Hawai'i.
