I leave Kona in the morning headed to Volcanoes Nat Park for some backcountry hiking and camping. Are there other places on the BI that would be good for backpacking? I'll be here for a month and if anyone has suggestions, I'm all ears.

I've always hitchiked down into Waipi'o and always been successful. The Z trail on the other side is bad enough, I certainly never want to have to do the full road walk down or up afterwards. Just put on a friendly smile and stick that thumb out!
Hiked down and back up! Funny thing: I passed four young guys when I hiked in...each had very heavy packs. On my way back I began to see large cans of food discarded on the side of the trail. They got tired of all that weight and decided 2 lb cans of Dinty Moore Beef Stew could wait til they got back home to Pahoa!

Arizona desert.

Actually, the hiking has been fantastic. Did all the National Park backcountry trails (except Mauna Loa trails) and have had a blast. Been here since 28 Feb and been in my tent on the ground except for the first two nights, one night no tent, just a tarp. Did two hikes within the park to the lava flow. No humidity there, just hot as blue blazes!!
