Great news! After more than three years closed, the newly refurbished Volcano House will reopen to guests this Friday, March 18.

The camping cabins have already been refurbed and they opened several months ago, the full restaurant will take a couple more months to finish, but guests can now once again book hotel rooms in a historic inn practically on the edge of the "most active volcano in the world."

Here's the authentic website for the inn, where you can book rooms or camping cabins.

Big Island, Hawaii Vacations & Hotel | Hawaii Volcano House

And for reference, the following is NOT a good site, and hopefully will not mislead anyone who brings it up with a search engine. It's owned by the former concessionnaire at the park, who has no right to use the Volcano House name any longer. The Naniloa Volcanoes Resort he runs is actually 27 miles from the volcano, in Hilo, and is generally rated quite poorly on the various travel sites.

Ratz! The rates went way up. We used to have guests stay there overnight so they wouldn't have to make the drive to the park and back in one day. Now, I dunno if it will be too pricey or not for them.

I know exactly what you mean. On the other hand, with only 33 rooms to rent, and $3 mil in rehab costs on top of $4 mil in seismic work, I know the numbers gotta crunch somehow.

Fortunately there are a lot of B&Bs in the immediate area, and there are much more affordable accommodations to be had within just a couple of miles.

Yeah, $200/night kama'aina. I think it would be great fun to stay there and not have to drive back to Na'alehu after a fun day at the park, but yowza!

The hotel had such a great "feeling" in years gone by. I hope they have recaptured it. Sadly, the last time we tried to stay there, we actually refused to accept the accommodations after finding that our room was "subterranean" in the annex building. Nobody had mentioned that when we made our reservations.

Thank you so much for posting this, OpenD, and for posting the REAL link. We are planning our first trip to Volcano, and we may think fall now (especially since it's usually so hot in Kona around that time), knowing the schedule that's happening. I definitely want to stay at Volcano House at least one night! Pricey, but hopefully worth it.

Do you mean it was actually below ground level?

Yes, it was a basement-type of room in the annex building. There was a row of small windows, about a foot or so from the ceiling. Outside the small windows you could see the bottom of the plants in the garden. The room sat below the gigantic rock fireplace that was in the lobby at entry level of the annex building. We checked in at the main hotel, then walked to the annex building, went down stairs to the room, thought about the tons of rocks above us (fireplace), thought about being underground (exits?), thought about there being earthquake potential (volcano activity), and after a few minutes decided that it was not the type of room we expected at Volcano House!

I don't know if they are reopening the annex building or not, but we'd stayed at the hotel on a few occasions before, and did not realize what it meant when they said .... "annex".
