My reference says they were a gift from Hong Kong to King Kamehameha V, yes, and they were originally sited on Molokai. When they got too numerous (about 30% herd increase per year) the paniolos were told to rope them for relocation to Lanai. But then the introduction to Maui in the 1950s that is causing all the problems for farmers and ranchers today was a deliberate plan to provide more hunting opportunities for vets of WWII.

I've known some farmers who will fence an area, run goats through the brush until they've eaten it down and then replace the goats with cows. Although now we have the fireweed problem so there will probably be more sheep since they are less affected by it from what I've heard.

A lot of folks also keep pet goats as lawnmowers. They usually live on a string and are moved all the time. There are also some small ponies that are the same way. We never have a winter season, things are always growing so it's good to get help in keeping the vegetation down.

Once your chickens are established, they will stick around the area and as long as they have somewhere to fly up to safety adult chickens are pretty mongoose proof. Mongoose don't climb, those gem-faced civets apparently do. Ugh!

Civets are a real nuisance, to say the least, and it's nice to hear that mongoose don't climb. Didn't know that.

Cheers,

And from the pictures, it looks like mongoose are smaller than those civets, too. I've had mongoose kill three-quarter grown chickens, but the chickens were in a chicken tractor with nowhere to fly up to.

There isn't a lot of ferocious wildlife out there, usually if something eats your chickens it's either the neighbor's dog or when they are young chickens, a feral cat. Mongoose love to steal eggs, though. We keep our chicken coop about three feet off the ground so mongoose can't jump up into it but the chickens can. We also have a fenced back yard patrolled by border collies. They do a lot to keep the chickens safe.

There's a reason it's known as Gloomwood. If you're from the Oregon coast it will feel like home, if you're from a sunny place you are not going to be happy.

Thanks for the insight. Sunny days 20% of the time does seem rather gloom, but sunny days 80% of the time just minutes up or down the road makes up the difference for me.
