Hi, I will be moving with my family to oceanview sometime between now and when we move.
I have a daily internet habit, and I need it for work. So how far would I have to go to find someplace with free wifi? Would the nearest place be Kona?

There are at least a dozen hotspots in Kailua-Kona, which is about 47 miles from Oceanview, and roughly an hour and a quarter travel time. Starbucks, McDonalds, Denny's, Island Lava Java, Kona Brewing, etc.

But 10 miles closer in Kealakokua is Orchid Isle Cafe, maybe an hour away. But note, they close at 2:30 pm. Orchid Isle Cafe - Home

Going up the windward side, Volcano is 52 miles, a little over an hour away, and there are free hotspots at Lava Rock Cafe and Cafe Ono on Old Volcano Rd., and Cooper Center on Wright Rd. The last is a community center, and I've found the signal there reaches the parking lot, and it's usable late at night when the other places are closed.

Thank you for replying, OpenD.

I have to take the bus since I don't drive. I think I heard the last bus runs at 4:00 something, so Kailua-Kona is probably the safest best to allow me as much computer time as possible. Though with the added travel time and any extra time it takes to walk to from wherever the bus stops to where the wifi is, the cafe might be better? Guess I'l have to time it.

Will hopefully only need to commute for a month until we have dsl at home.

If you add up all the cost of travel. it would probably be cheaper to pay to have internet delivered to your home.

I think we will get set up with something at home. I'm just thinking of how to get to it in between the time I move and the time it gets set up.

Have you checked if a Verizon hot spot would work? The Verizon coverage map seems to suggest depending on where you are in the area it will work.

Well, yes, I'd say that it's good you'll only have to do it for a month, since it will be pretty much an all-day affair using the Hele-On bus.

Basically the three buses a day from Oceanview to Kailua-Kona are in the morning, and return is in the afternoon. The last northbound bus from Oceanview is 8:50 am, and the two afternoon southbound returns leave Kmart at 3:55 (M-F) and 5:10. (M-S). No Sunday service. About an hour and twenty minutes trip time, fare is $2, or $1 if over 60. Or you can buy books of 10 tickets at 25% discount at KTA Supermarket at Kona Coast Shopping Center.

Be sure to check the Hele On site for schedule changes and announcements.

The Na'alehu library has free wi-fi when open and it's 20 minutes away from OV.

There's a coffee shop next to the Ocean View Post Office that MAY have free wi-fi. Worth checking into when you get there.
