Aloha,

In the past I had promised to do this once I got enough material to do it. It was difficult to find good quality material because technology wasnt all that advanced in the past. Some of the film i have is in great shape and some not so great. Please remember technology wasnt all that great so colors may not be so great.

Often you hear residents of Hawai'i complain about tourists or newcomers comming to Hawai'i, but not everything is bad. One positive is tourists and newcomers are really great at recording history. Most of the film on this tread is recorded by tourists vacationing on the Big Island. Portions of the films don't necessary show the Big Island in the past, or just shows tourist traps. Feel free to skip forward.

As you get ready to enjoy this long trip, just sit back and enjoy the gorgeous nature of the Big Island and remember you don't have to take it all at once.

Purpose of this thread? To enjoy the nature of the Big Island and to perserve her in the future. No politics etc ok.

Aloha

The Big Island was kinda a challenge, unlike Oahu which is a major tourist magnet, the Big Island wasn't as big for tourism in the past. So finding material was kinda difficult. But found some. So kick back and enjoy. Mahalo

What a very nice photo!

I think only 1990 and earlier is allowed though.

That photo set is wonderful!
The subjects not only show what tourist accomodations looked like in those days, but the clothing, the way people are posed and the choice of canoes, swimming pools and buffets give a view of what people aspired to in those days.

Growing up my dad worked for United Airlines and we traveled to Hawaii quite often. And these images remind me of those experiences I had. My trip to Maui in 2012 was a different experience, but the memories of the rural and younger Hawaii are what I truly enjoy.

My dad still has his extensive slide collection and I'll see if I can convert some of them and contribute.

Very nice. Thanks for posting that. Mahalo nui loa.

Just looked at the first one so far. Though labeled as Kona, I'm pretty sure at least some of that is Hilo.

The plane at the beginning is a hoot. I've never seen that stairway up to the top of the tail arrangement before.

Anyone know what kind of plane that is? Without peeking at references yet, my guess is a Mallard, though I could be all wet about this amphibian.
