From what I read the only active flow on the east rift zone is Kahauale'a 2 and there is no flow toward the ocean. I'm not sure the direction of the flow, but have seen photos of it moving through a forest. Anyone know the distance to an inhabited area? Is it moving toward Kalapana or another community?

Here is the link that you are looking for:

HVO Maps

The latest map (March 7) shows minor advance of the Kahauale'a 2 Flow in the forest, south of Hawaiian acres in the general direction of Pahoa. I am not familiar enough with the terrain or behavior of the volcano to know whether there is even a remote chance of lava flowing in Pahoa, but I rather doubt it.

I have posted the link to this video before. Please watch the entire video as the current projections for the path of this flow are shown towards the end. Of course, as the speaker states many factors can change the behavior of this flow. It could even stop at anytime. It is not meant to alarm but to inform.

Many thanks for the links! Indeed, it is a slow moving flow, but realize that can change. I last visited Feb 2013 and hiked out to the flows going to the ocean. Quite an amazing experience. Will be back in a few months for another visit and the links will help me keep current. Thanks again.

What would you guys say is that distance between Eden Rock and the tip of the flow going towards it?

Of you look at the small scale map KauaiHiker posted, the tip of the flow is not going toward Eden Roc, but is actually flowing east and moving slightly away from the bottom of that sub-division. The scale at the bottom right shows it's about 2 miles distant, and the north pointer shows how far you need to tilt the map clockwise to get north at the top, which might help you to orient yourself. If you do, then the subdivision between Glenwood and Hawaiian Acres, directly above the flow... and I believe at higher elevation... is Eden Roc.

I was wondering if it would be close enough to try a hike through that almost impossible to penetrate jungle. I would be tempted to see the tip of this flow. Will that be dangereus due to potential forest fires?

So you're asking for advice on a public forum for advice and/or instructions about hiking through a natural forest reserve to see an active lava flow that is advancing and triggering fires? I have a simple answer: do not go!

I bet the folk that were taking groups to the flows from Kalapana are feeling the pinch!
