Dave-
See below: hope this helps. We broke even after the first day. They have a special rate for the taxi: ask about it.

Enterprise
BIG ISLAND-KONA *NO A/P SVC
NON-AIRPORT: 74-5583 LUHIA ST.
KAILUA KONA, HI 96740-1698
Tel.: (808) 331-2509

This was the rate of our last rental.
Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab or similar
Day @ 64.99
6.00 USD (HAWAII RENTAL SURCHARGE)
+taxes, insurance (if you need it)

It is the airport fees that are the killer. Renting off-airport is much cheaper per day.

Try Aiona Motors on Wiwoole St in Hilo, just south of Kawili St and Mamalahoa Hwy. They rent used cars, and they are great to deal with.
You gave me that company a few weeks back. I've emailed, but no response. As I get closer to my trip I'll give them a call.

The rates are substantially less than at the airport, plus their vehicles and service seem to be reliable.
Thanks for the tip!

The best price I found at the airport recently was over $300 for 7 days. Dollar rental at the King. Kam was $160. Worth the cab ride.

Our quote from Avis via discount Hawaii is $224.72 that includes all the taxes and fees base rental is $145. That is for a Ford Fiesta... At the Hilo Airport.

I wanted to report, the charges quoted by discount Hawaii was accurate and we were happy that we booked though their website.

Yep, agreed! I eliminated all others before arrival. Oahu and Big I rentals were smooth sailing no hassles fast fast checkin and out.

Put rental on ChaseUnited MileagePlus Visa - covers collision etc. in primary position - there may be one or 2 other CRCs but I have not found them yet. United is #1 - Geico covers my non-owners liability policy on roving rentals worldwide
