I'm planning on moving to the BI Hilo area in 3 years. Is there anyone planning on moving there in the future?

Right now I live in the desert and cannot wait to move close to the water.

Since this is he "Moving to Hawaii" forum, well, yes, lots of folks are planning to move here.

There is a lot of water on this island, especially this week when it's been raining a lot. Average annual Hilo rainfall is over ten feet of rain, so you'll have lots of water to enjoy.

Probably not. It's extremely unusual for anyone to ever daydream about moving to tropical islands someday, especially ones within the US.

I am planning to move to the big island sometime in the next three years. Mostly depends on when my wife has had enough with her teaching job here.

Hey DVSG - we're planning a move to BI in 2 years, give or take. That's when we both retire. In the meantime, we go there a couple times a year, drive around the island, stay in different districts, trying to find the area we want to live in.

I feel your pain about the dry desert. We are in a big drought right now, with hardly any rain. And I live on the coast! The only water is in the ocean. I love the lush humidity and landscape of BI.

What are you doing to prepare for your move?

If you want rain, definitely move to the Hilo side. It's lush and beautiful in many areas. Great also for growing fruit, veggies, etc., except recently the heavy rains have caused some crop rot: according to my farmer's market friends.

We live on the west side in an irrigated desert area and are close to the water.
Panoramic views of the ocean and 4 mountains. No mold issues or wood rot. To our knowledge no Coqui frogs: it's usually very quiet except for the Francolins and other birds, great neighborhood, but it can be dusty.
A/C is probably a good backup for when the wind's not blowing (rare) and it's in the high 80's. Other times, opening the doors and windows allows nice breezes through the houses.

Best of luck with your pending future move.
