You can make your own adjustments based on the car you have - but, if you do have solar panels - or take advantage of free charging, you can make it work
And if you have that Corolla, at 71 miles, you won't be stuck on the side of the road...

Doing a little research on the battery range issue, it seems that rapid advancements in battery technology will allow several different car manufacturers to bring out EVs with 200 mile ranges by 2016... LG Chem says they have the battery pack ready, and have a contract with one of the companies, but they won't say who with... and the Nissan Leaf is expected to double its current range next year, to something around 150 miles range.

Like I said earlier, it's just going to get better and better.

Rumored 200-mile EV confirmed to be on the way for 2016

The Tesla Model S - with the 85kWh pack will go 265 miles. It'll also go 0-60 in 5.4 seconds (or, 4.2 with the performance option) - since cars with this performance get incredibly awful gas mileage, the Tesla is a car that can actually save you a lot of money to charge vs. gas. Although, they do start at $73,500 after incentives.

There's a charging station at Home DePot? Was that the Hilo one? At some point we will have an electric car, we already have electric bicycles but we aren't riding those to Hilo.

Tesla said they were building the high end cars first to fund the lower end cars later. Kinda a reverse boot-strapping operation. There are quite a few electric race cars these days. We watched the Pike's Peak Hill Climb this summer and the electric cars had noise makers on them so folks could hear them coming. They made all sorts of different howls, hoots and beeps.

First post to the forums, have been doing lots of reading as we are seriously thinking of moving to the big Island and want to say thank you to all the great info you guys post on here.

Currently live in Northern Nevada and super happy that Tesla has decided to develop their giga factory here. Hope it will keep the housing prices increasing so when we make the move we can sell our place for a nice profit and buy something on the big island.

Have to say though it seems strange to me that Nevada with sooooo much sun over 250 days per year isn't a leader in solar and ev charging stations, while hawaii is trying to lead the way.

With electric under .10 kWh, there aren't a lot of incentives to go solar depending on usage in Nevada. Cost of electric in Hawaii is 4x+ more.
