My boyfriend and I live in GA and are planning on moving to Pepeekeo very soon. However, we are having great difficulties in finding an apartment to rent in the city. We have found several in Hilo, but would prefer to live in either Pepeekeo or Paukaa. Can anyone PLEASE suggest a place from one of those areas

Pepeekeo is a tiny (formerly) sugar cane plantation community with a school, a propane tank seller and a small grocery store.

Your best bet for an apartment would be in Puueo which is just south of Paukaa. Puueo is a community on the upswing. They had problems with drugs there in the past but it is gradually being gentrified. There are apartment buildings there.

I think Paniolo Cowgirl is referring to Papaikou, which is right next to Pepeekeo.

I believe that the apartments in Pepeekeo is low income...I always get the feeling that it's a little ghetto there.

Most apartment buildings are "in town" (Hilo).

That is county housing in Pepeekeo. Puueo is the neigborhood just across the river from downtown Hilo and south of Wainaku. (and Paukaa) Older area with many apartment buildings.

Out of curiosity, would it be pronounced pay-pay-A-kay-O ? Or peh-peh-eh- keh-O? Or neither?

The nice thing about the Hawaiian language is that each letter is pronounced the same way no matter where it is found in a word, or in any other word. See here for your answer:

a w isn't always pronounced like a v. the pronunciaton depends on whether or not it starts a word or follows a particular letter or vowel. see the link listed above. so in acutality, it does matter where a letter is found in a word. no?

Probably more accurate to say the all "vowels" are pronounced the same no matter where they are found in a word.

Kind of like Japanese or Spanish ...almost the same vowel sounds.
