Arrived 1 Jan for our two month stay. Excited about being here again and enjoying the sights, sounds and especially the hikes.

The wind yesterday, last night and much of today caught us by surprise. Lost power for a time today, but everything fine now. Today on a trip on Hwy 11 between Wiohinu and Ocean View observed many trees down that had been cleared from the roads. On our return trip a huge 50 foot tree fell across the road in front of us and only 35 - 40 feet from our car! Needless to say this was a hair raising experience. Was able to turn around and take South Point Rd and skirt our near disaster.

BTW, the snow on Mauna Kea is a nice sight!

Yes, that was some crazy storm. I had a garden shed that withstood Iselle just fine that completely disintegrated in last night's winds. Lots of folks here in Oceanview experienced damage from that one. Glad the tree missed you.

Wow! It sounds scary to have a tree fall in front of you. At least it wasn't on you!

Yup, we had damage here and we'd not had any from Iselle. Although, we'd prepped for Iselle and didn't for this one. The wind came from an odd direction, I guess. The neighbors lost a tree that had been in their yard for decades. We lost tree limbs, papaya trees and some of the bunny hutches were tilted over which broke the automatic water system. Those had been secured for Iselle, but weren't for this one. Power was out for awhile, then back, then gone again, but it's been steady now for at least a day. It's nice having the coffee maker automatically make coffee in the mornings. Just got internet back this morning. I think some folks over in Kukuihaele and Ahualoa are still without power. They were yesterday and I've not chatted with them yet this morning so maybe it's repaired.

The power was out in the Naalehu area from about 7 or 7:15 til around 1 something. Got it back much sooner than I thought. Power folks have their hands full.

Internet just came back on after being out since Saturday morning. Water was still out in some areas on South Point Road this afternoon. A lot of clean-up from roadways and around power lines being done by neighbors because it's just too much for HELCO and county staff to get to all at once.

We lost two banana trees that were producing bananas, and our prized Royal Poinciana. We fared much better than our friends with a farm on Lorenzo Road, and will be heading up that way tomorrow with the chain saw and machetes. Luckily they lost only one hen; the tree that fell on the rabbit hutch didn't hurt any rabbits. Two goats were born during the storm.

Where else but the Big Island could you lose banana trees and gain a couple of goat at the same time?
We arrive this Saturday evening, still working out some issues, but looking forward to spending a day at the Black Sand Beach.

Mahalo!
