What types of things do you like to do? Do you prefer fast pace or low key?

The Big Island is BIG, so I suggest staying part of the time on the Kona side and part on the Hilo side. Have you thought about getting a vacation rental through VRBO?

Do you need some recommendations on what to do here?

Start with an overview, so you get a sense of all the different kinds of sights there are to se, and things there are to do.

The State has a nice Tourist Guide that will get you oriented enough that you'll know the right questions to ask...

OP, you'd need to say what you like to do. For example, some people like to stay in one spot, others like to explore. I did a week-long circumnavigation of the Big Island. Loved that trip.

I second this. Furthermore, if you enjoy going out for drinks nightly and hitting up "nightlife", stay in Kona. If you want to be close to all the beaches, Waikoloa. If you truly want to explore.. Then split your time.

Beaches and shopping with some sight seeing on the Kona side. Then head over to Hilo. No idea what the lava will be doing by then so it's safe to say you'll want to actually stay in Hilo or on the north side of the city.

From there you can enjoy Puna if it's not cut off from the lava flow. Volcano National Park, the zoo, botanical gardens, Waipi'o, waterfalls, and the list goes on. For the adventurous types.. Rent a car and just drive. You'll see majestic views and always something to do!

Each district is very different, each wonderful for their own niche. I'm an east side girl, but I love going over Saddle and hitting up Makalewena, Hapuna, or Puako.
