"Unless you lived in Kapoho I suppose. I guess it is a preview of what is to come in Pahoa."

Why stop there?

The Hilina Slump is a 5,000 cubic mile (20,000 kilometre³) section of the Big Island of Hawaii on the south flank of the Kilauea volcano. Between 1990 and 1993, Global Positioning System measurements showed a southward displacement of the south flank of Kilauea up to approximately 10 centimeters per year.[1] The slump has the potential of breaking away at a faster pace in the form of an underwater landslide. In Hawaii, landslides of this nature are called debris avalanches. If the entire Hilina Slump were to slide into the ocean at once, it could cause an earthquake in excess of a 9 in magnitude, and a megatsunami. Previous megatsunamis in Hawaii 110,000 years ago caused by similar geological phenomena created waves 1,600 feet (500 m) tall.[2] Were such a megatsunami to occur again, it would threaten the entire Pacific Rim. (about half the world's population?)

Three active and one dormant volcano on Big Island and one dormant on Maui is the breakdown, I believe.

These volcanoes are known as shield volcanoes, which do not typically explode with devastating consequences.

Lava flows from the most active Kilauea in East Hawaii tend to be slow, and can easily be escaped by walking or running.

Significant threats do exist, but primarily to property rather than life and limb.

Kilauea has been erupting constantly for at least 25 years now.

A new eruption from Mauna Loa or Hualalai down the west side of the island would be very big news.

Mauna Loa has shown some signs of underground activity recently, but that doesn't mean an eruption is imminent.

On the contrary, people here are amongst the most laid-back on Earth. Whether it was Pompeii or St. Helens, Iceland, or wherever, humans have been living near erupting volcanoes for as long as humans have been recording humans living near erupting volcanoes.

Risk mitigation from acts of nature is an odd art. The Gulf states can get destroyed by hurricanes. The Midwest has tornadoes. California has earthquakes. Half of the continental US could get destroyed by the Yellowstone Super Volcano. Anywhere near a coast can get tsunamis. Places that seem safe can get clobbered by nature without expectation ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Oso_mudslide ).

Most of this island will get "repaved" by volcanic activity eventually. Probably not within my lifetime. I'm not going to move into some other natural disaster zone to escape this one.

The Earth has never stopped changing, and it never will.

Yeah, people around here aren't that worried about much of anything, especially lava. We attack it with egg beaters and old golf clubs. As long as people like Mr. Lee are around, we're are in good shape, and thank you again, Mr. Lee
