True, there's more jobs on Oahu, but there's too many people there. They look right past you and don't see you. On Oahu, there's more jobs, but there's more other people looking for those jobs, too. The OP could send his resume to a couple of places such as the shipyards or the refinery and find out if they'd want to hire him, if they didn't, then try Maui or Hawaii islands.

I have a mechanic friend on Oahu, born and raised there, with a mechanic's degree and he's working in a gas station convenience mart since he can't find a job turning wrenches. He's a good mechanic, too. His rent is around $800 per month in a very small third floor walk up apartment but it's close to where he works so he can ride a bicycle or walk to work if he wanted. Being a mechanic, though, of course he drives his car.

Oahu's unemployment rate as of 12/15 is 2.7%, and economists generally agree full employment is considered 4% (meaning, once it dips below 4% - essentially anyone lookinf for a job should be able to get a job and the remainder making up the rate are people not actively looking). So, many employers are desparate for people on Oahu. For comparison sake, Maui island is 3.0% and BI is 3.7%

But how many people can afford to live on the jobs being offered? Rents on Oahu are sky high these days. Maybe a mechanic can manage it, though.

While I don't have time to poll the workers on affordability- the good news for them as US citizens is they are free to leave the islands and stop all the "dreaming"

It's an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. IT IS AND SHOULD BE SUPER EXPENSIVE

I was just Google walking on Google Earth as well as Street view (when it was available) the other day and noticed there's tons of other little islands below Hawaii. Those are the perfect places for all the secluded beaches, remote island dreamers to be. All the fish and coconuts they can eat and no building codes from the looks of some of them. And since they'd not need to pay for apartments and cars (since there aren't any), they'd not need employment, either.

I did it 3 times over years before I was permanent, (moved over, then back, then again). I've known people here who've done it 8 or more times in just a few years. It just gets in your blood.
Isn't everything we do in this life "temporary, kind of an experience"?
