Yurtgirl, I am so glad you mentioned the schools. I have a 9 year old daughter. I have been looking at the schools in the area we are looking to move. I have done some research on that as well. So, as a child going to school, you have to earn your way in to be accepted? This has been a big factor and a lot of talk between the husband and I. He is concerned she will have a hard time coming there as a mainlander. I have read about the school situations on this forum.

Just curious, what area/schools are you considering? My daughter is 11 and assimilated well. Though she used to fight boys on the mainland, so the scrapping issue stopped pretty quickly.

I'm at the bottom of the island-Ka'u district. Fairly poor and agricultural based area. My daughter is one of only a handful of Caucasians at her school.
I am sure Hilo area schools will have a different mix, your children potentially different experiences than ours and I will leave it to others that lIve or have lived in that area to comment on what to expect.
But I will say, whatever issues my daughter had her first year, she now has numerous friends at her school.
Okay, thanks for your insight GrassyKnoll. I am sure it's an adjustment for children no matter. I am glad she has lots of friends now. That's positive. All the talk has really helped me a lot and eased my main concerns. Also, like it's been said many times before on this forum, it's best to get out and experience it yourself. It really helps to hear from all of you and talk. Thanks to everyone for getting on here and talking to those who have questions and concerns. That's community right there!
Have you given some thought to converting to another race before moving over?
I hear Rachel Dolezal is considering doing just that, she's decided to become Hawaiian now. Personally I prefer to convert to the optimum race for the occasion, I don't like the idea of being locked into anything long term.
