My son and I are coming into Hilo Airport at 7:38 p.m. a day earlier than we had planned. The people picking us up can't pick us up until the next day, so I have two questions 1. Is there a hotel near the airport that would give us a room that late in the evening for less than $100 since we'll be leaving the next morning and 2. Is there transportation that is available that late in the evening like a bus or a shuttle, maybe even a taxi? I imagine we're going to be exhausted and just want to get some sleep...

We've never been on the island before and looking online at hotels and trying to make reservations, I can't tell what's close to the airport and what's not.

Thank you in advance for any help you guys can offer

You'll need to take a taxi. Some hotels can be available at under $100 a night, but it will depend on the date. Use something like Orbitz.com to see rates and it will also tell you exactly how far it is from the airport. Also, bring earplugs

Seaside is closer to two miles, I believe, which is walking distance but maybe not so much with a load of luggage and time constraints.

You have a 2AM pickup?

Your right.. Reeds is 2.5 miles from airport. It's such a fast drive.. the distance seems shorter.

Check B&B's and AIRBnB
AirBNB shows a whole pile around the airport.

Seaside is a little nicer IMO, and an easy walk over to Ken's or Vera's to eat. Be aware though OP, neither is luxury by any stretch. There are no really great hotels in Hilo. Get your baggage as fast as you can and there will be cabs at the curb. If you get delayed, you might have to call one. The airport is tiny and easy to navigate.

"There are no really great hotels in Hilo."

The renovated Hilo Hawaiian hotel is a solid 3-star.

The newly opened HILTON Doubletree isn't too shabby either.

While you'll find no sub $100 rooms at either location, I thought the record needed to be set straight.

I've stayed at the Seaside Hotel more than once. It's dated but the rooms are clean, staff friendly, and easy walking distance to many restaurants. They had kama'aina discounts as well as free breakfast deals for booking on their web site. And by free breakfast I'm not talking about a crappy continental breakfast, it's 3-4 options of hot food from a menu cooked to order and including juice/coffee.

I have not stayed at the Hilton - however, I have stayed at the Hilo Hawaiian far more than a hundred times. I don't see 3 stars at all.

You can clearly hear the frogs from sunset to sunrise. Loudly. The bathrooms are not nice.
