If you have computer security experience, I'm sure there is a way you can work remotely. Surely with the amount you used to earn you must have some savings then you can move and get more opportunities on the mainland. It depends if you want to leave or stay in Hawaii.

For all the dreamers out there.

The ability to obtain mainland IT positions while in Hawaii (except for hard to obtain software development positions with a demonstrated track record) is practically zero. Just a hairline off of zero is the best way to put it.

Now, if you are on the mainland and your management considers you a key employee after a few years - asking if you can work remotely in Hawaii is more viable.

Practically all recruitment software will reject your resume automatically if applied from Hawaii before a human can even read it.

But have it - the best remote position site is www.flexjobs.com.

You qualify for assistance from the State of Hawaii. Assistance can be in the form of temporary cash, food benefits (SNAP), transportation or money to repair a vehicle for the use of job searches and interviewing. They will also supply you with shelter or you may qualify for Section 8 housing whereas you can find your own housing and the State will pay the landlord for the rent. There are obviously certain qualifying information for each of these benefits and more, but the good news is that there IS help for you including, most importantly, assistance for your mental health. This link will provide you with lots of information about various programs for the homeless or those about to be homeless: Benefit, Employment & Support Services | Homeless Programs
My thoughts and prayers are with you. If we were already living on Hawaii, we would consider helping you; however, we have not yet purchased our home there yet. Wishing you nothing but the best....

If you are broke I would stay on the Hilo side of the island. You will have a hard time finding affordable housing on the other side. I don't think that you have to give up on living in Hawaii, just line up a work/syTay housing situation while you look for gainful employment.

If you are broke, you won't find any housing in Hilo or anywhere else. Everybody wants a housesitting type position.

It might be too late to reach you since your last activity was on February 13, 2017, maybe your already homeless and have no access to the Internet anymore. If you do check back, I also suggest that you get back to the mainland, to a state that has more generous welfare benefits to get you back on your feet and then you can try to get back into IT, and rebuild your life. There's probably no future, or only a dim future in Hawaii for you.
