I'm a brand new resident of BI and thought I'd drop some some light hearted fun on you. I'm from California and we like to hug. When I met my BI neighbors, we hugged at the end of the night. When I met the man who blessed our home, we hugged in departing. All this and so I thought the brief hug embrace was customary here too. Then, after a hula show in Hawi last week I walked up to the ladies and told them how great I thought their dance was. I guess one of them was flattered and approached me with open arms. Not one to turn down a hug, I opened my arms ready for a brief 'thank you' hug. With my hug she gave a kiss right on the lips. Not wanting to show my surprise, I rolled with it. I was suddenly flattered myself! Don't get me wrong, she was a, um, mature hula dancer. I didn't mind the kiss at all, but I have a question for you real locals: is the kiss on the lips a BI tradition?! If so, I can get used to it If not, I'll just consider myself lucky.

Aloha!
Dave

That's great that she shared that custom with you so quickly. I live on the BI and people do kiss "right on the lips" both same gender and different genders. Not everyone does it and I must admit that I was a bit surprised the first couple of times.

At the other end of the island, they generally hug on meeting and skip the kiss part. Sometimes you'll get a forehead to forehead moment, but mostly it's just hugs.
