Looks like Alaska airlines is getting in ahead of Southwest' non stop flights from Sacramento to the Big Island (and other islands), starting this December. It will be interesting to see how the fares change next year.

If the price of oil doesn't start coming down - fares will continue to rise regardless of how many flights come from Sacramento. You've also got renewed labor contracts by most of the airlines - so those rising employee costs are going to be passed on.
Sacramento typically gets a substantial premium over lets say SFO mainly because the dominant carrier, United, has flooded the Hawaii market. Often, Hawaiian can get a $200 round trip premium over SFO out of Sacramento not because the plane is full - but because nobody else flies Honolulu-Sacramento.
Alaska will have Maui and end of year Kona. Nobody else flies those routes, so don't expect much in terms of airfare deals - you'll still need to go to SFO for the best deals. Hawaiian rarely fills the plane on the Sacramento route, so if Southwest enters the market, expect someone to blink and leave that city. I wouldn't expect a fare war of any of the carriers purposely losing money on the route though - not with Wall Street expectations of profitability.
Price of oil will keep going up until it runs out. We need to stop spending $Trillions on war and WMD, instead research to create renewable energy everything, including transportation.

Admittedly a tiny drop in the bucket, but...Alaska airlines is trying a bit of this on their own.
Good for them! Just need to make the tanks 100% biofuel full.
