Now that fissure 8 has paused, how is the air quality in Kona? Can you see the water horizon and Mt. Hualalai? Curious, b/c I use to live off of Queen K and Lako St. half mile from Holualoa Bay and I only saw the horizon maybe 3-4 time in the two years I lived there.

They ended the KFVE news tonight with a shot of a golf course in Kona.....

The point they were making was no vog as Guy Hagi joked about it......

Enjoy it while you can.

Sorry, I don't currently have such a shot. You can always go to Kona coast web cams for a view.

Absolutely crystal clear over in Kona. It's almost disorienting since it seems so different these days. Kinda like the way it used to be back in the early 2000's before vog became an issue. We were just there yesterday and amazed at all the stuff up on the hills we could see that hadn't been visible for years.

The horizon was an absolute flat line, although the wind kicked up a bit in the afternoon and sea spray softened it a tiny bit. Maui was distinctly visible with a sharp outline. Didn't see colors on Maui too much, though. On really clear days, there's color on Maui. Didn't look to see if Lanai was visible. Usually that's a possibility from the upper road, if I remember right. It's been years since that could have been possible.

It's scary to think what this clear air is going to do to rents and property prices in Kailua-Kona. I've already heard of one person who quit their job in Kona of $60K a year because they couldn't find a house to rent that they liked. There may be other considerations than merely rent, though. I heard this from their shift supervisor who was upset that his co-worker had quit with only a two week notice.

I was under the impression that most people were oblivious to the vog, particularly visitors. When I experienced my first clear day and saw the mountain (Hualalai) I was like: OMG!! "That's been here the whole time???"

Tourists may be oblivious to the vog unless it affects their sinuses, then they notice it. But the dreary 'smog' that vog causes really blunts the beauty of the area, as we've been noticing since the beauty is back again. Now that the air is clear, there's going to be more tourists and home buyers over there.

I was just chatting with some tourists from California today who mentioned they'd postponed their Kona vacation last May because they heard the vog was bad. They were thrilled with how clear and clean the air was. I guess they have smoky air in California at the moment because of forest fires.
