That's nice of you. Sad to say, but the income gap between haves and have nots in hawaii seems to be growing over the year, and not shrinking. I really feel sorry for people trying to make it on a lower income. There's a net exodus of the brightest and most educated locals in hawaii. What's left is lower income people, retirees, and dreamers moving to hawaii from the mainland.

There was a small local park on the southern end of the island where locals swam. Road 137 I think. The ocean waves crashed up on the rocks but the large natural inner pool was warmed by the volcanic vents people told us. I wondered if the last eruption covered it over or otherwise destroyed it.

My wife has me looking at rentals again She loved those doughnuts .

WWII history on Hawaii Island is up around Waimea where there was a big military camp. Not much left there but a roadside plaque, though. Or Cafe 100 in Hilo. It was started by the cooks from the 100th Battalion's 442 Division (I hope I got that right) which was the most decorated military group ever. "Go for broke" was their motto. There used to be guys who served in the 442nd at Cafe 100 having breakfast most mornings, but I don't know how many of them are left now.

The park with the big natural hot pond was eaten by lava. It was a lovely park, but no more.

He even has the little paper card they printed out at the time for all the sailors that were present at the surrender ceremony.

Not sure what other WWII places to visit on the big island related to WWII. After that we would want to visit a more relaxing place to visit, suggestions?

Cafe 100 in Hilo was started by the cooks of the 100th Battalion, 442nd Division and sometimes some of the guys still show up for breakfasts there on occasion. Not sure how many of them are left now, though, it's been awhile since WWII.

Camp Tarawa up near Waimea town was military during the war. There's still the stray Quonset hut left around, too. Not any official military site, though, other than a roadside plaque. It's near the entrance to the Parker Ranch house on the 'upper road' out of Waimea.

Hawaii has some of the lowest income inequality in the United States - you don't have Wall Street, Silicon Valley, etc....

Hawaii ranks 46 in income inequality and the ranks 43rd in income inequality growth

Sounds like all the reasons I left L.A. You should have moved to NYC from California (or maybe still should). Plenty of reality here.

It is now December 19, 2018 and I’m at my house in Keaau Hawaii deep in the rainforest on a slate grey day with the sound of rain so loud on my tin-roofed house that it sounds like when you fry potatoes in hot oil.

Living in Hilo, Hawaii doesn’t feel like home and aloha here is a scam and a business. After living here for about 6 months I was ready to leave and move somewhere else do to the abundance of people- that I want to say are not the kind of people that I am particularly fond of. I’ll name a few like: stinky young hippies and self-righteous liberals, Yoga and Vegan snobs, Old rich Hippie snobs, Wanna-be mediocre musicians, hateful Locals and Punatics, I’ll describe a Punatic as best I can -as far as I can see a Punatic is a broke ass person who wants to hide out in the lava-fields Pahoa area of Big-Island Hawaii maybe build some kind of a make-shift little house and not shower, smoke weed and be a little lazy disgusting dirt-bag and not be a productive member of the world and a lot of them might I add are poor white trash but not all of them are there’s definitely other flavors of Punatics.

While most people that either haven’t lived here long enough to really see it for what it really is or are just too delusional to really see that this place is NOT a paradise will say things like you’re just negative or why not focus on the positive. I do realize that everyone does not see things in the same manner that I do but I will say this- I’ve met plenty of people who see things exactly the way I do or very similar and they couldn’t get out of here fast enough. I am a realist from the old-school that see’s the reality in a lot of situations when a lot of people today live in a dream world of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Youtube. Everybody thinks they’re famous these days and thinks they are a star just because they uploaded a couple selfys to one of these social media platforms OK that’s besides the point -back on Hilo I don’t know how many times my wife and I have been out on the little crappy village they call Hilo and decided that we would get some food from some of the restaraunts and been totally disappointed with the service and the food and at worse have even been made sick but mostly just disappointed with the both service and food. It’s not about customer service to these people here in this place they don’t care about the customer and they will let you know that with their disdainful attitudes towards you.

A system that only favors locals here if you’re not local- meaning someone who isn’t of Japanese, Korean or some kind of Asian or Hawaiian or Portagee and were not born here either you gets no love from these people. I like to call it localism if you’re a white mainlander you can FORGET about trying to do anything in this community past working at Wal-Mart or Target because they will make it hard real- hard for you. African Americans this is for you this is my observations you are in the same boat here in Hawaii. Don’t be fooled into thinking that they like you just because you see Bob Marley memorabilia everywhere and that reggae is popular here amongst a lot of locals you are nothing to them either they could care-less about your plight or anything else that has to do with you. The only other way that I have seen people that aren't from here successfully integrate into these peoples culture is to marry into it and I’m not even sure about that. So unless you are a Billionaire that doesn’t have to worry about the same things that us little people do and you can afford to build yourself a nice fortress on a beautiful cliff or beach somewhere overlooking the ocean and can have anything you want at your beckon call then BE MY GUEST you my friend can live in Hawaii with little to no problems but for the rest of you- don’t ever think that you’ll come to Hawaii ESPECIALLY HILO Hawaii and “MAKE IT” and one more thing it's way to wet in this place it rains waaay too much in my opinion.

I agree! The banter on this particular thread has been especially quick-witted and entertaining. I even caught myself chuckling out-loud intermittently.

Adding this one to the subscription list.

I moved to outside of Hilo and I LOVE IT SO MUCH!! It is ten million times better than where I was living in California. I can see more homeless in one day in Lodi California, than I have seen since I have been here. EVERYONE has been nothing but nice to me. The lady at the post office in Pahoa was so nice, I wrote her a thank you card for my mailbox (Lies that you cannot get one!). I have so many friends. The only thing I don't like about Hilo, is trying to park on weekends. I am in escrow for a house that is 100K cheaper than my house sold for in po-dunk Lodi.
The original poster must have a bad attitude, because this island has absolutely embraced me!

The park with the big natural hot pond was eaten by lava. It was a lovely park, but no more.

I read some of the cinder cones areas on the north west side were used in training l for Marines that later went to Iwo Jima in 45. There was a great black sand beach , part of a state park on the north west tip of the island. When you parked at the end of the road you had to walk down a fairly steep dirt path covered with some of the largest snail I have ever seen. Then at the bottom jump down to get to the black sand beach. A bit secluded but really nice with a path back up the other side of the hills that narrowed quite a bit (a ravine like feature where you could reach out on touch both sides of the rock walls at times) that was used by cattle. Muddy and the occasional cow pie but eventually comes out on a ridge opposite the parking lot in the distance to the south. We were not sure where the path led so eventually turned around and headed back to the beach.

The park with the big natural hot pond was eaten by lava. That is very sad to hear, it was one of the most enjoyable places we visited. It was a place, like the doughnut shop that I wanted to revisit.
