Aloha JtP, check on the Hawaii Gov't. website; DLNR, Hawaii dot Gov. They have fishing regs. and fish locations, looks like most freshwater fishing is at Wailuku river and Wailoa river, both in Hilo. It's my guess no fishing in streams around Hawi because of sheer drop to ocean. Sounds like the fish you saw was either Oscar or Tucunare.

Default Fresh water fish

Stupid me! Just happened to think of a place for you to fish, Joe... Two places on Kauai, actually; the Wailua River in Kapaa, also known as the only navigable river in the State of Hawaii, and the other would be the Hanalei River, in the town of Hanalei, where God goes to vacation. I think you can rent boats and I have no idea what kind of fish you'd find, but I'm sure it can be done! Good luck!

There is bass fishing on several islands, trout only on Kauai to my knowledge; Waimea has the right temperature for trout and I think there may have been a few private or club attempts to stock and grow trout, but nothing public to my knowledge. Check with Trout Unlimited; there is a branch in Honolulu.

The OP was in 2007, and they have not signed in for 6 years, so they won't benefit from your posting. Although, yes, if someone else later does a search for "trout", your update could be useful to them.

Site hints:

#1 Check the date of the posting(s) in the upper left corner of each post. It gives the posting date.

#2 Click on the poster's name at the top of any posting, then in the drop down menu select "view public profile", which shows the last sign-in date (except for member's who have privacy settings).

True, it's an old post, but now the rest of us know that Trout Unlimited has a branch in Honolulu. Which is very odd considering the very limited amount of freshwater fishing in this state. Perhaps they are sea trout or perhaps the Trout Unlimited folks just wanted a way to vacation or live in Hawaii and write it off as a business expense.
