Asking for advice from strangers on the internet is fine, as long as you also do your other homework. You might also try subscribing to the local online newspapers (cheap when compared to making a huge financial mistake!), West Hawaii Today and Hawaii Tribune Herald. And add in the Oahu paper, the Honolulu Star Advertiser. Some articles will be duplicates, but you'll get a fair overview by reading all three.

Most important, as has been mentioned above, is DO NOT BUY SIGHT UNSEEN!! No matter has friendly and helpful a long distance realtor might seem, you must do your own inspecting.

Second most important, as also mentioned before, is LIVE IN THE AREA BEFORE BUYING. The day to day life in an area might not be best suited for you, and the night activity can be a whole other situation.

This all applies to where ever someone is thinking of moving to in Hawaii, be it Puna or Kona or Waikiki or Lahaina, etc.

Excellent advice. I did exactly this, with the Tribune and the Star.

A bunch of years ago I had subscribed to the (then) Honolulu Star Bulletin, but I also bought all the Hawaiian telephone books - both the yellow pages and the white pages. I bought them through our local phone company and the cost (very inexpensive) was added to our phone bill. It makes looking for businesses very easy, gives phone numbers and addresses so you can make a list of places to look when you get to Hawaii.

And they looked great on the bookshelf.
