I spent three wonderful days at the Hobbit House Bed and Breakfast in this town. You can find pics on Google. An absolutely unique, hand-built lovely suite with views. Oh, and the man who built it builds very neat large nutcrackers!

How far is Naalehu from Green Sands Beach?

I also saw there is a Green Sands Subdivision, looks to be in a slightly different location than Naalehu or Green Sands Beach though. Any info about that, might be interesting as well.

This part of the Big Island seems to be Zone 6 for Lava flows? Or is that in a slightly different spot as well - difficult to see for certain on the Big Island maps.

Naalehu is at mile marker 65 and the road to South Point is at mile marker 70. The road to the Green Sand Subdivision is between Naalehu and South Point Road. The subdivision is very sparsely populated and only the main streets are paved.

Once on South Point Road it is about seven miles to the end of the road. This is the southernmost point of the entire United States (Key West has the southernmost point of the lower 48). You can drive to the end of South Point Road in a regular car; the road has been improved since the rental companies made their policy of telling people not to drive there. You park your car at the end of the road and then walk the two miles to the Green Sand Beach. You can drive there if you have a good 4WD with high clearance and know where to go; we've done it many times and it's not easy. If you walk, take plenty of water because it is flat and dry and no shade. The walk is definitely worth it!

Yes, this area is in lava zone 6. It's because of our location in regards to the rift zones.

Sounds like an interesting area.

I did, once upon a time, visit the Green Sands Beach....it was beautiful. Walked the entire way, the two miles. It was windy. But I loved that 'spot'.

Now I'm putting together the 'rest of the story'. I hadn't looked at Green Sands Subdivision before, that's interesting that it is relatively close to that Beach. Granted it's not an ideal beach for most people, quite rugged, and not exactly easy to get to, but great for me.

Thanks for the info.

How much has Na'alehu changed in 2020? Or has it changed much at all?

Speaking of Na'alehu, what about the Kau area of Na'alehu too.

Thank you.

Ka'u is a district (akin to a mainland county), the whole island of Hawai'i is a County. Na'alehu resides within the Ka'u district.
So you may want to rephrase what you are asking.
