We drove Saddle Road this weekend on the way home to Hilo from Waimea. It was such a beautiful day we took a detour up to the Visitor Center and then a walk up the hill across from the Access Road. Here are a few photos I took with my phone...Enjoy!

The drive is SO much better than it used to be. (But there are still Yield signs at the one-lane bridges on Kona-side. Someone coming toward us ignored their sign and passed us on the bridge this last trip. A scary moment...but, thankfully, there was room for both cars.)

It may have been intentional. The most reckless driving I've ever witnessed in the US was on the Big Island.

One time I was passed by a guy doing about 120 on a two lane road just a bit North of Ka'u.

About 10 minutes later I saw the remnant of that same car - I cannot write in detail what the remnant of that guy looked like.

I later read that he had a BAL of about .25.

Agree. But that 10 miles or so west of Pohakuloa can still be very scary, as your story shows!

Been going to BI for yrs, even own a house there now, and never seen Saddle Rd or pics of! I've never driven Saddle Rd since I've always had rental but this looks like any ordinary road.

it's those one-lane bridges and people not yielding. the same thing happened to us. can't wait for the rest of it to be finished. we don't travel saddle road any more and go around the hamakua coastline to get to kona. it's very tempting to go fast on the newly paved areas.
