Its looking like I may have a job in Homewood off of Lakeshore coming up in the next few weeks (already had one interview and felt really good about it). Wife and I found a great historic house in Montevallo (we love the historic, small town feel), but want to know, would that commute be terrible? My hours would vary, but primarily between 830-430 (ish). Are there any other areas we should look for that safe, historic feel? We also found one or two in Irondale, but am worried about how safe it may be.....

Try Bluff Park in Hoover. A much, much easier commute and perfectly safe.

But what's your general level of comfort in terms of house price?

That's a long way, something I would not want to be forced to do everyday. There are nice, older home style neighborhoods all over like Bluff Park, Cahaba Heights, Homewood, that would do the trick and not punish you on the commute. I understand that these places re not as cheap as Montevallo. Irondale is not a dangerous place, it just happens to border not so nice Gate City.

Good point. I also think a 60-mile-a-day commute would wind up being more costly in terms of gas and wear-and-tear on the car. Assuming 20mpg @ $3.50/gal., that's an additional $200/mo in gas alone. Plus you'd be spending an extra hour in the car daily -- at best -- that you won't get back again.

To me, it's worth it to spend a little extra and have that extra time in my life back again.

Thanks for doing the math for me That actually makes quite a difference. Bluff Park is very appealing, but I really wanted to stay out of Jefferson County if at all possible. Not a deal breaker, just a preference. I'm looking for 3-4 BR, 2BA under 215k. Been looking for a while, but good to know that the commute is really not worthwhile.

Not sure what you have against Jefferson County, but if you're really insistent, then Helena/Pelham might be an alternative.

If it is about the whole BK thing, you just gotta let that go. There's no fallout and life has not changed significantly for the 600K+ or so that live in it. It also doesn't say anything about the people that live within it either.

if you just really like montevallo, i guess go for it, but that is going to be a pretty rough commute.

If you can get around whatever is a problem for you with Jefferson County, Edgewood, which is part of Homewood is packed full of houses with great charm and the type of neighborhoods that can't be thrown up by some developer.
A great place to live with a family and always has been. It did not need to be saved from anything.

It also just happens to be across Greensprings Hwy, from the area of your job. No commute at all.

(great shops, bakeries , restaurants, parks, major shopping including grocery stores, and also churches)

I commuted from Montevallo (3 miles from the Airport exit, so I was closer to 65 than you would be if you're in Montevallo proper) to Valleydale Road, with a start time of 8am. It was a good 20-25 minutes if there were no wrecks or other interstate drama. I think you'll find that the drive HOME is worse. Don't know why -- that's just how 65 is. Particularly on Fridays during beach season.
