212,000+ or 229,000 ? Seeing different numbers I'm thinking it might be larger considering everyone might not be accounted for on the west/east side , imo. What's the likes of Bham taking in fairfield, Brighton , Lipscomb , Tarrant , centerpoint, homewood into the city limits?

I do not believe it is any where near 229K right now, probably somewhere around 213k.

Annexing Fairfield, Brighton and Lipscomb have at least been talked about, but no real legal moves have been made yet to my knowledge.

No way Homewood would do it, and Centerpoint is unlikely.

My guess on your seeing two different figures: The first is the actual 2010 census numbers, the second is the latest estimate, 2013 estimates are the latest city estimates available from the US Census. From comparing to other cities around the country, the estimates are inflated somewhat. Whether they are trying to correct undercounting in the census, I don't know. The city of Atlanta only gained 4k between the 2000 and 2010 counts, the latest estimates have it gaining almost 30k in the three years since. Yes, there is a lot of development and gentrifying in the city of Atlanta, but I still think that it is inflated.

That would be great, but I think with JeffCo still being weak post BK, and still paying some debts off - it wouldn't be advantageous for Birmingham to take on all those debts and the responsibility of the infrastructure of the county. And then, of course, I'm sure that Hoover, Vestavia, Homewood, Irondale, M-B would resist any sort of inclusion or participation.

I think they should lobby hard for the west, but only if they can convince Bessemer since it brings some good tax revenue from both commercial and industrial to balance out the weak areas like Brighton, Lipscomb, and Fairfield and Midfield. Then there's still unincorporated Forestdale hanging out there. Hueytown and Pleasant Grove would probably resist.

The idea, I think, would be to secure as much strategic area around I-22 and I-422 as possible for future development.

As a former Jacksonville native, I think the County/City consolidation solves many problems that smaller sized cities still have. In saying that, folks are moving to Clay and St. Johns county because Duval County/Jacksonville school system plain out sucks.

Duval County is close to 900K. Including Jacksonville Metro/Beaches, its over 1 million.

Well, I guess it would be number 20 if all 659,479 (as of 2013) Jefferson Co residents were counted as Birmingham.
