Hi all, my daughter will be attending Med school at UAB in the fall. None of us are very familiar with Birmingham and are needing advice on area's to rent an apartment or preferably a house that would be located close to campus. Looking for something in a safe area that she could find around $1200 month and also allows pets. She will have a roommate so it needs to be a 2-3 bedrooms. Any starting places to look would be much appreciated. Dale.

The houses for rent in Forest Park, South Avondale, Clairmont and Red Mountain are going to be at the very least that much to rent. It is a high demand area. There's a bunch of new apartments coming online this summer around Parkside. Maybe she could look there as well.

The Parkside apartments won't be that cheap!

Depends. Studios and some one-beds are well within that range, including LIV. $900 to $1300.

Just because you go to UAB med school doesn't mean you have to live that close to UAB. I did my residency at UAB(med school elsewhere) and plenty of the class lived in hoover for example. The extra few minutes it takes to get to campus really aren't that big a deal. I'd look at hoover.

The reality is that the areas close to campus you can afford for 1200/month aren't going to be very nice. Avondale and crestwood?....no thanks.
