I know that there is more civic pride in the metro than ever, and I can definitely see it passing. I am certain that there would be pushback from some, which is to be expected, but I see a path forward with an aggressive public campaign. It has already been said that some school districts could remain intact in metro governments. Once people understand the truth, it could pass easily.

I think it would be easier if they are planning to just absorb the unincorporated areas of JeffCo and merge the county school system... at least at first. If they maintain the current separate municipal systems, then great, do that... but that probably takes a whole lot more paperwork and legislation.

Birmingham and Jeffco merging school systems would be a great first step and help remove both a real and perceived liability from Birmingham.

And.... This was reported yesterday.

https://bhamnow.com/2023/06/13/5-key...of-birmingham/

Important excerpt from the second article reads, "Woodfin was asked about the school system, including concerns regarding the potential merger between Birmingham and Jefferson County school systems."

I'll say this! A city of Birmingham Jefferson Alabama would instantly have a population of 670,000 give or take! Already the largest metro in the state by a landslide, we would regain the largest city title by a landslide!
Reading that Comeback Town article, it's depressing how close we were back then to something transformational.
