With the New Orleans Pelicans affiliated NBA G-League team set to move down from Erie, Pa. in less than two years, I've started to wonder what the name of said team will be (the current name Bayhawks doesn't seem like a good fit so I'm positive a name change will happen) and when the team name will be announced? My personal favorites are the Iron (I REALLY liked the name, colors, and branding of the short-lived AAF team) or any other name that would pay homage to Birmingham's industrial past... something like the Birmingham Vulcans (also the name of the short-lived 70's WFL team), Steel, Force, Blaze etc.... If they just have to keep "Hawks" somewhere in the name, Skyhawks would work for me. Birmingham's first semi-pro basketball team adapted that name way back in 1947... thoughts?

They tried "Blaze" in the past and several other names but some felt that name and others (don't remember) were racially insensitive. Hard to find a name that doesn't offend someone.

This is interesting. I guess some felt Blaze was reminiscent of the 16th Baptist Church bombing... but granted... Birmingham does have a pretty inflammatory history. Worse that about any other major US city. I wish they’d hurry up and announce. Give the team an identity so that we can start to come up with nicknames, chants... a culture for the team. That and figure out the best gimmick to actually get people in the stands.

Blaze would be too similar to UAB.

Why would that matter? I would think that one would easily be able to differentiate the Birmingham Blaze from the UAB Blazers... but maybe you’re right.
