I just applied for a job in Birmingham, what do people think about Northerners over there? Will I have any problems? I'm Puerto Rican, but I'm from the Bronx, NY. Also, Alabama has a bad reputation when it comes to race. Is it still segregated? Has it changed? Please let me know. What neighborhoods are good? Thanks!!

I don't think you have anything to worry about. People will mostly just leave you alone and mind their own business but aome locals are friendly and inquisitive and will ask you questions to try to get to know you better. Even if you are the type of northerner who loves to remind every one they are from somewhere else that's different or better or whatever, you'll most likely just get a polite indifferent smile or shrug. Fitting in will be as easy as you want it to be.

Good luck with the job.

I'm just going to be nice.

NO, you won't have any problems, unless you cause them. Your biggest 'problem' will be avoiding random crime, like any city.

These are such cool links. You know if someone spends the time researching there is a spot for everyone in a city area. Note- that's not to say you should only hang around people that look or think like you. But I'd think people would also want an outlet for it at times, mixing it up is always a good idea.

i wouldn't worry about problems due to your race or being a "northerner". that's an overblown stereotype in my opinion.

coming from the Bronx / NYC however, that does present a potentially drastic change in lifestyle (if you're used to robust public transportation, 24-hour city vibes, etc... things that few cities in the US, let alone the South, can offer).

You won't have any problems with people no "accepting" you. The only problems you ever hear about like that are usually dreamed up or instigated by someone trying to make southerners look bigotted. I think you'll be very welcomed and probably make many friends if you're just a little cool. No one's going to force you to go to church, but they'd welcome you if you wanted to go. No one's going to make you drink sweet tea, but you are expected to try grits and cornbread. Nothing wrong with that though.

Bottom line, be cool and treat people nice and you'll get the same respect in return.
