I think this really depends on your lifestyle and what you're looking for in a gym.

I belong to Anytime Fitness and Axiom, which is like Idaho Athletic Club.

If you want open access to a gym at all hours of the day and night, no frills, and generally well kept machines/clean facilities, I would suggest Anytime Fitness. I have gone to the gym at 11:00 at night to run because of my work and school schedule, which I would not be able to do at Axiom or IAC. The Anytime I frequent is in Nampa and it's always well maintained - no broken machines, no wait for machines, etc. However, it does not have classes/amenities or much of a "social" aspect.

If you are a social gym rat who doesn't care about going to the gym at midnight, then I would suggest IAC or Axiom. There are more amenities (pools, fitness classes, etc) and more of a social aspect to the atmosphere in their gyms. However, their hours are limited and I believe their monthly cost is more $. I'm not sure about IAC, but I mention Axiom because they are always fundraising for causes and offering fun group activities. So it's not just about the money they are getting from your dues - it's about the good they can do in the community and their passion for fitness.

Of course, there are some really great family-oriented Y's and rec centers depending on which area you live in!
