We are headed out to visit Boise in April and wondering if Organic food has a niche? How is the restaurant scene out there? I have dairy and gluten sensitivities so eating out has always been pretty tough living in the midwest (chain restaurants galore) where I am currently.

Organic food is popular in Boise and definitely has a niche, this valley is a breadbasket and a lot of organic crops are grown locally. During the growing season locally and regionally grown organic food is all the rage. Most supermarkets have organic sections and there are specialty grocery stores such as the Boise Co-op, Whole Foods, Huckleberry's, and the soon to be Trader Joes. The local restaurant scene is impressive for a city this size and seems to be constantly evolving. Many restaurants use locally sourced organic fruits/veggies, locally grown free range meats, eggs, and of course local beer and wine. A good number of restaurants have gluten free menus as well. I know personally that gluten free food is easy to find in Boise and eating out with gluten sensitivities has gotten a lot easier the past few years. I am actually very impressed with the options for gluten free food in the restaurant scene here.

Just to add on to what Syringa is saying, there are plenty of organic and gluten free options in Boise. Fork and Bittercreek both seem to almost exclusively use local and often times organic ingredients. They also have some gluten free options. Locavore in Bown Crossing has a pretty extensive gluten free/gluten light menu as well. It seems that most places, at least in Downtown Boise, have gluten free options nowadays.

The Capital City Public Market starts up again on April 19th this year. If you come around that time you should check that out. It's downtown on 8th and Idaho street and is a pretty great farmers/public market. Lots of organic produce and goods.
