Hi there! Currently living in PA, and moving to Idaho eventually for the girlfriend who is with me here right now. I haven't started college yet, and will be 23 soon, kinda just been doing some various jobs to see what I like and not. What are some of the big job fielda in the Boise area? I enjoy the outdoors, and despise being in an office. Are the trade unions easy to get an apprenticeship in out there? How is the economy for trades? Also, are there rural areas within 30 mile sof town? I'd like to have my house secluded and land to have a small hobby farm. Thanks for any help!
Any city can use electricians and plumbers. Other than that... computer science and electrical engineering, and not much else.
No unions here. Right to work state.
Not really much available land outside of town unless you get out toward Nampa or some parts of Kuna... and then you're looking at about 30 to 45 minutes to commute to downtown Boise during rush hour.
Western states are not at all like states on the other side of the country. Hard to explain, but generally you either live in town or you don't. Large open spaces between towns and cities. I've lived in Michigan and Pennsylvania, most of my relatives do what you want to do. Have a little hobby farm that is 5-10 acres and live 30 minutes from a larger town. Knew one family that lived in Kuna with a little hobby farm and there might be some spots around Nampa as well like the other poster said.
Used to know one guy that was a union electrician that lived in Boise. Seemed like he either was pulling 12 hour days for a month or not doing any work for 3 months. Being part of a union made it much more difficult to find work. They usually overbid the jobs and did not work on as many projects. He was thinking about moving to Las Vegas where union work was more plentiful.
yeah and the commute can be a pain in winter. No unions but thats not the end of the world really
