Hello, I am a retiree(61 years old) from a suburb of Chicago. I am seriously thinking about relocating to the Boise area. I will not be seeking employment. If anyone could suggest good/nice(low crime) towns within an hours drive from Boise, It would be greatly appreciated!
I am very much into the outdoors! Fishing, hiking, camping and photography.
What size would you consider? Most of those mentioned are under 1,000 people. Emmett at around 5,000. Mountain Home is bigger. Eagle is probably the plushest.
Thanks for your response NW Crow! Since I am single and want to find a mate, I would prefer at least 10-20 thousand population. This is why I wanted to be somewhat near Boise. Also for entertainment!
Eagle seems too expensive for me. What are the best areas around Boise that you don't have to be in a HOA?

The towns up in the mountains/forests outside of Boise are all pretty small and definitely under 10,000 people. If you want to be within an hour of Boise and want to live in a smaller town/suburb, the valley west of Meridian and Eagle would be a good option. There are a lot of rural areas out that way, especially as you get closer to Nampa.
Mountain Home has about 15,000 in town and the overall county has a bit less than 30,000. If that looks / feels too small, consider Caldwell, Meridian or maybe southeast Boise.
