Downtown Boise is nice and has easy access to a lot of events. I will say there has been some gang activity that has filtered downtown but it ha been far and few and usually has been late at night. Before you get set on any specific area you should consider price range, because different areas in the Boise Metro have different prices per sq. foot. Living in the downtown area can be expensive. SE Boise is very popular right now so you might find the homes be a bit higher per sq foot because it's a popular area.

So before you get too attached to an area it's important to know what your needs might be as a family. What is you're price range and what's the square footage and rooms you are looking for? Are you looking for new construction or is a fix me upper?

I took the liberty of looking this up on the FBI crime stats:
Overall crimes per capita: Boise ~ 1.2% /1000 and Nampa ~ 1.11% /1000
as of 2005. That doesn't look like much to me...
My very safe feeling town is ~ 11.3 and where I moved from was ~ 21.0, also quite safe.
I'm no statistician, but Nampa looks safer, per capita, than Boise to me.
I wonder if the 'sky is falling' in Nampa....

*(these are my calcs comparing total section 1 offenses to the population, per thousand--eg. non-scientific, but mathematically accurate apples-to-apples)

That is great info! Thanks for looking that up. Actually, the real estate market is really moving here in Nampa. Three homes have sold in our community in just the last 2 weeks! Again, a great place to live!

know that in certain parts of California it is illegal to walk down the street in groups of 3 or more, etc

Am I the only one that thinks this a huge violation of people's rights? Usually I am.

The only place to avoid is Garden city, its not really violent, just grimey with a lot of meth, SE Boise is one of the best parts, but very spendy, NW foothills are also really nice

Default I know it sounds wierd

I will be in the Boise area next weekend for a visit and I would like to know the exact area people think is the "bad side" of town. Street names if possible so I can go see for myself exactly what the area looks like. Everyone has their own idea of the wrong side of the tracks so to speak. Caldwell's bad side and every other city as well. Thanks in advance for any info you can give me

Gangs in Nampa!?! I didn't think a few illegal immigrants from Mexico causing havoc now and then meant they were gangs!

Sorry, but this thread is too much--gangs in Nampa--I am laughing.

This is Idaho--people freak out and think the sky is falling if there is a crime or a rash of crimes. Even though Nampa has had some issues with wanna be gangs (illegal Mexicans to be exact), doesn't mean the city is dangerous and full of gangstas.
Nampa is probably one of the quietest and cleanest small towns you could ever live in or visit.
The population of Nampa is mainly caucasion with a growing Asian and Hispanic population, the city is clean, except for a few dingy areas around the rail road tracks, and more and more people are moving to Nampa (yes Nampa) for a better quality of life then where they moved from. Nampa is surrounded by lush beautiful farm land, fruit orchards and wineries are nearby with some very pretty vistas to enjoy. And Boise is a 15 minute drive away with all it has to offer.

The railroad tracks are what divide the "North Siders" from the "South Side Locos" in Nampa.

That's right; they've actually given themselves names and they regularly tag each others 'Territory' with their spray paint grafiti. Isn't that cool (sarcasm)

This is what I call Gang Activity. Especially when the State finds it necessary to create 'Gang' legislation, and the schools have 'Gang Task Forces'. This is not an imaginary thing.

I am from Nampa, and most of the city is a nice place to live; but the gang areas are becoming an increasing problem.
