I have been offered a job in Boise which is $20,000 less then I currently make in CA. Would you take this pay cut to live in Boise? I am conflicted. Those of you from CA is the cost of living much different in ID? I did not see a big difference beside gas and maybe house prices.

The Boise area is fairly cheap to live in, much cheaper than CA. It really depends on what you want out of the move, and how much you make in CA.

I took a job in ORegon at a $25k pay cut from AZ. It was great at first, then kid number two and kid number three came about. I was broke, and ended up leaving because I couldn't find a decent paying job in my field.

Yes, the housing is cheaper. SO are groceries, gas, utilities, etc. I think you just need to look at the thousands you will save, which won't add up to your pay cut, then decide if whatever is left of the pay cut after you subtract your savings and figure if it's worth it.

But without knowing what kind of salary you make now and what you would be taking in Boise, it's hard to say.

Thanks Dave....I currently make $30.68 and have been offered $21.00. This equals to $20,000.

Uhm.. I don't know where in Cali you live now.. but I have lived in Boise and at 21 bucks an hour, you can live rather well in Boise. So I would really consider it.

Lets just say that at 21 an hour that more than your making now living in Cali.

Car and homeowners insurance (maybe health?) should be less as well. Electric bill should be better too.

Also consider if the there are other jobs available if job does not work out.

This website will calculate the cost of living between where you live and where you want to live.

When I moved from AZ to Boise, I saved almost $1600 per year on car insurance plus my electric bill went from $300 a month in the summer down to about $100 a month. So between insurance and utilities, its like getting an extra paycheck or two every year.

Ditto for us, too.

20K is a big pay cut. Personally, I don't find food and stuff to be that much cheaper in Boise than in AZ or CA. However, insurance, utilities and gas (because of a shorter commute) can be greatly cut and it is like getting extra money every month. We only took a 8K price cut when we moved and we have been doing very well.

I think it depends on your situation and what you are looking for. If you have money saved, low or no debt and a job offer, then go for it . It's great here.

I think Boise is a great city, but I wouldn't move there for just another job. If the job isn't something you're going to enjoy it might not be worth the move - even with Idaho being better than CA (for many people).

If it's the same job, just less money I'd do it. I would leave Seattle for Boise for the same job at $20,000 less if my wife would go along. If it's for a better job I'd get her drunk and move the family out before she woke up.
