I love Alice Munro! I was turned on to her during my Sunday school class called "Faith and Literature". We elected to stick with a short story format so people could come and go without the long-term issues that arise when reading a book.
Her stories are concise with a focus on decisions made by the characters. The settings are typically Northern, often cold and never detract from the story. Characters make unpredictable choices, just as we all do in life sometimes.
Oh good! I wanted to ask someone about 'Hold me Fast, Don't Let me Pass'... what happened at the end? Her stories are very complex, richly layered and challenging... but maybe a bit too vague (or maybe I'm just new to her).. having a hard time figuring out what how some of her stories end, although it does make you think & try to figure it out.
I love short stories because they are instant gratification.. and even thought I love to read regular books, I do have problems with follow-through sometimes.. I get distracted and the book gets put aside.. so with a short story I can finish with no problem. And it's fascinating how a good author can say so much in just a little 'nugget' of a story.
