I'm looking for new books to try while on my knee surgery rehab. I'll try something in Fantasy, my vicodin addled brain determined a few weeks ago as I clicked the BUY button for "Game of Thrones". After a few chapters I moved on to something else.

So I guess I'm asking if anyone has any suggestions for fantasy novels for someone who never reads that genre? I just couldn't get into "Thrones" at all....so maybe this just isn't my thing? I do like magical realism (for ex. G.G. Marquez).

Thanks for any ideas. And does EVERYONE like Game of Thrones? It seems I'm out in left field based on reviews I've read.

Did you watch the mini-series? My husband isn't a fantasy fan..or I should say, he wasn't a fantasy fan until he watched the series on tv, and then he spend 2 weeks plowing thru GoT. They did a very good job in staying true to the book, and I think he found it a big help having the characters and scenes in his mind's eye while reading.

But no, not everyone liked the books. I sold a lot of them, recommended them highly, and customers would come back giving me the evil eye sometimes lol.

What other fantasy have you read? Or, who are your favorite authors in other genres?

I haven't read Game of Thrones - looked at it and decided it didn't seem like my thing either.

If you have read Marquez, then have you tried Isabel Allende? She also writes magic realism. I particularly recommend The House of the Spirits and Eva Luna.

I don't find her later books nearly as interesting.

That's strange because I feel like Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire is the type of fantasy which appeals to non-fantasy readers. I know it appeals to a lot of historical fiction fans who aren't normally fantasy readers because it's very much based on medieval history and the War of the Roses. Of course you're not the only one who doesn't like it - on Goodreads, it gets 657 one star ratings and 1256 two star ratings. It gets even more positive ratings but being in the minority doesn't mean you're alone in your opinion.

Maybe you just don't like fantasy?

I don't normally like fantasy or even medieval books usually, but I am loving "Game of Thrones".

But then, I am listening to it, and that makes it come alive.

The author and the narrator are both born story tellers, IMO.

How about "The Name of the Wind" by Patrick Rothfuss?

I enjoyed Game of Thrones, especially once the show started. But I'm having a beast of a time getting through the second book. I think I'm just bored...I think I could edit it down to about half the size and then I'd like it more. It's just moving sooo slow. Meanwhile, I picked up Deeper by Jeff Long and was through it in a week's worth of reading before bed...

I am not sure what magical realism is.

Sounds interesting, though. Can someone explain it?

A new one out I haven't gotten to yet is "The Night Circus"....it sounds kind of magic-y.

Magical Realism stories are set in our world, but there are supernatural or magical elements, like Harry Potter or books by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Magicians, ghosts, people who live forever, that sort of thing are part of their world.

I'm not an enjoyer of fantasy, either, but I did like the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde, which is a light-hearted series that takes place in an alternate timeline (the Crimean war is still happening) where people can go in and out of books and interact with characters.

OH!

I love that too but never knew what it was called. Thanks.

OP, have you read "Harry Potter"? One of my favorites of course.
