I started a thread a couple of years ago on more or less this same topic. I believe the thread title was "Are some children's books so good they transcend their genre?"
It was the faces, so full of character and emotion. And so many people dislike bats, but Stellaluna was such a cute, sweet little girl. I haven't seen Verdi, though I followed your link. I'll look for it next time I'm someplace I can see it. Or even the library. I don't care if they think I'm too old.
I'm a librarian, and trust me - we don't judge! If you feel weird, just say it's for your kid/grandkid. And I think we carry all of her books in my library, so it's likely yours has them too. She wrote another good one called "Pinduli," about a young striped hyena.
P.S. Bats are awesome... and quite useful little creatures, too.

I just last week told the librarian she had to promise not to tell anyone how many cartoons I watch. I've seen all of Shaun the Sheep and Wallace and Gromit and I never pretend they're for anyone else. It was just funny the week I rented the Korean demon movie and she went back looking for something else like it had to be a mistake. Nope, just a sign (I tell myself) of an open mind.
I have four kids (now all adults) and eight grandkids, so I always have a good excuse for buying kids' books!
There are so many good ones out there, but my favorites are CS Lewis' Narnia books. In fact, I have my original set from the 1960s but just realized the other day that I am missing The Horse and His Boy so I reordered that one. I think it's about time I reread the whole series for about the 15th time!
For younger kids, I LOVE the Olivia books. They are just delightful.

I read whatever I want and people can judge away!!
Everything from A Criminal History of Mankind to Twilight.

Some children books have amazing artwork in them. They are worth saving and getting out from time to time, just to savor the artwork. In Argentina I was loaned a few children books by a neighbor, that I could use to learn simple conversational Spanish, and one of them sticks in mind as some of the most memorable illustrations Ive ever seen.
Anybody remember the old Value Tale joints, circa late 70s ?
I was feeling nostalgic, & recently bought one thru eBay. I always remember the Louis Pasteur & Columbus editions.. basically life lessons thru historical biographies.

That is truly funny, on so many levels! I'm still snickering.
