Before you buy at a book store, check them out on Amazon and eBay.

Why do that?

I have found some great deals on ebay. Personally, I don't mind reading a "used" book when the price is right. Amazon tends to sell new books for less than a physical book store can compete with.

If you are a book store owner, no offense was intended.

I have found it really useful to read the reviews, both professional and non-professional (I prefer the non-pro, to be honest), on Amazon. Also, Amazon recommends titles that are similar to the one you entered. It's a great way to find new books and authors. I don't buy from there often, but I find it an excellent resource.

If you're looking for a specific writer or title, those are the first place to look, if they are out of print, and many are. Then The Strand and Powell's. And any local used book store - actually, the local store should come before the last two.

The issue of where to buy a book has come up on several occasions. Rather than delete them as off-topic on the other thread, I've moved them here with an edit of Alice's initial remark.

Thanks for that move, OTR. Maybe we could come up with an "Arguement Room" for folks who seem to want to do only that ,instead of contributing to the current thread

Apparently, responding to a statement within a response with a request for clarification and explanation is less meaningful to the continuation and evolution of a thread than mocking said request with eye-rolling emoticons.

Thank you, Trudeyrose!

I truly appreciate the small, and occasionally neighbourhood bookstore, and nearly bought one myself about 15 years ago. I love books!

Now, here I am in the back-waters of the Poconos and Catskill Mountains and nary a book to be found. I am actually writing an article on our local bookstores and in a geographic region the size of Rhode Island, we have one new bookstore, two second hand book stores and one wonderful literacy program that raises funds selling second hand, and the occasional new book.

So, when I want a book now, and live no less than 40 miles to the nearest shop, it is and will be a major chain or resource that sells books on line that I will turn to for purchasing. It is a pity, not only because we are quickly seeing the disappearance of the solely owned bookseller, but we are also seeing a different kind of reading habit being formed by larger chains. Also, it was one of my greatest pleasures to stop at the local bookseller, browse to my heart's content and come away with one or even a half dozen new books I never knew about, hadn't read a review of and most often found terrific.

When I visited our sole and only new bookseller two weeks ago, I went for a preliminary interview of the owners, and found myself in good company, lively conversation and 4 books richer.

However, this forum is not the place to persist in interjection of the rights and wrongs, the woes and follies of the book kingdom, as much as these exist.

Why not? If not here, then where?
