I guess it could be a novel that is based on a true life story but I think any kind of book that gets into the human mind and emotions and behavior that follows.
Try looking up autobiographies or biographies of people with mental illnesses. Many of then take you into the person's head to see the world from their point of view.
A Beautiful Mind by Sylvia Nasar When Rabbit Howls by Truddi Chase Wasted by Marya Hornbacher
are just a few examples.
One of the best I think was The Shoemaker by Flora Rheta Schreiber. I think it was so well done that it almost makes up for Schreiber's fraudulent Sybil. I don't like the subtitle "anatomy of a psychotic" because I've worked with many, many people who have been psychotic and almost none have ever harmed anyone. But Joseph Kallinger was both schizophrenic AND a murderer. The book takes you into his delusions.
