Hi folks,

I'm a law graduate from Scotland. A friend and I will be visiting Boston in September. Just a few questions-

What is the weather like towards the end of September?

Any advice and/or recommendations on good places to stay (with specific emphasis on cost and location)?

Any particular recommendations on must-do activities? I've got the freedom trail marked down and also a Red Sox game

As I come from a legal background, I am considering paying a visit to a court in Boston- is there a supreme court in the city? If so, is it worth visiting?

Cheers

The weather you are most likely to see at that time of the year is very pleasant--warm, dry days and nights that are cool or maybe a bit chilly. However, be prepared for the possibility of chilly weather, rain, or warm and muggy days. Late Sept. is a changeover time of year here, so it's possible to have a variety of weather. Pack a sweater and a light jacket in case some nights are chilly, or there is a spell of chilly weather, but some short-sleeved shirts would be a good idea as well, in case there's a spell of warm, muggy weather. Also, some protection against wet weather would be useful, in case there's a rainy day.

About the Red Sox . . . get tickets early. Start looking now. If you find all the games sold out, check back here. There are some users here with the inside knowledge of the best ways to get tickets even when games are sold out at the Sox ticket office.

Courts: There is a U.S. federal district court in Boston, and the state supreme court is located here. Here is some information on tours of the federal courthouse: Walk-in Tour: John Joseph Moakley US Courthouse Boston - Walk-in Tour: John Joseph Moakley US Courthouse at John Joseph Moakley U.S. Federal Courthouse, Jury Assembly Room, 1 Courthouse Way, Boston, MA 02210-3002 | Eventful. Info on touring the state supreme court: Visit the John Adams Courthouse. I'm not sure whether the public may sit in the gallery and observe hearings in progress in either of these courts the way one may do in lower courts. I would think you could find out about this at the phone numbers in the links.

The Red Sox play at home vs. Toronto Sept. 17-19, then Baltimore from Sept. 20-22. They are out on the road for another week after that. Finally come home for three games against arch rival Yankees Oct. 1st-3rd.

It'd be much easier to seek out tickets for the Toronto or Baltimore series. Most likely cheaper too. The ones against the Yankees are highly sought after, and you'd most likely have to go to standing room only sections, if not secondary markets or scalpers.

Mid to late-September is the best part of the year, in my opinion. Warm days, cool nights, wonderful early Fall blue skies.

Where are you staying?

Many thanks for your replies

I'll definitely check out getting Sox tickets asap. It would have been great to watch the game against the Yankees but going by what has been said, it might be difficult to get tickets. The Baltimore game is a good shout - I'll look into it!

We haven't decided on accomodation yet although we are thinking of staying in Woburn as there is cheap accomodation there with apparently good commuter links? I think there is also a big mall nearby too so that should be handy. Any comments on Woburn? Is there any particular accomodation you can suggest and/or recommend?

Woburn is a suburb that has one commuter rail train stop. It doesn't run frequently and stops running early on weekends, so it wouldn't be convenient for someone coming to boston for a vacation. Look on Priceline or Hotwire for something in the city instead.

Why not do a search and see which hotels in the city have availability in your price range? Hotel prices fluctuate, and you haven't stated your budget, so there's no point in rattling off a bunch of names when you will have to look them up for yourself and see what's available anyway.

Well, is there a problem with looking for recommendations from people who may have stayed in specific hotels/accom which they can recommend?

Budget is around $80 a night maximum.
