Just moved from a complex in Quincy to JP to live with room mates, save money, and be on the orange line to commute to work (no longer have to pay for parking).

However, I'm having second thoughts. I'm thinking I may get my parking spot back at work and commute via car, because I get home every night at 10pm, and I swear I'm hearing gunshots everynight in this neighborhood. I live closer to Stony Brook T stop next to center street. When I lived in Cambridge (sketchier area next to galleria mall) I never heard this many shots.

Are they gunshots or something else?

Not in the mood to get shot and mugged while walking home at 10 at night.

There are some projects in the area, but from what I've heard it's pretty safe (despite the image people have in their mind with projects). I've heard that the JP/Roxbury border is not so safe.

I moved to JP from Nashville in January and live near the Green Street T stop. I've never heard gun shots and I definitely feel safe in the area. I keep my guard up if I'm walking home alone at night but so far I haven't been given a need to be fearful.I would check the crime reports to see what's really going on in your part of JP.

Probably not gunshots...likely you're hearing fireworks. It's that time of year.

THIS kind of post is THE reason I don't waste my time anymore giving very much advice and opinions about the Boston inner-city on this forum. Good luck with that "fear-based" life style. Ridiculous...

The good news is that you are spitting distance from the Sam Adams brewery. Free tours, free beer! That area has come a long way in the last 20 years or so. I've never been there too late at night, but I've spent a lot of time around there during the day as I used to work out that way and for the most part felt safe.

Although one time I did witness a standoff between the SWAT team and some guy holed up in a house on Boylston Street near Amory Street. There were a few shots fired. I also witnessed some guy being chased with a machete by his brother through the JPNDC parking lot.

Lol.

Stop stressing.

I've lived in many urban areas, just never heard so many damn gunshots.

I guess it must be fireworks because I looked up recent crimes and there have been some shootings but fairly far apart and in the most likely scenarios (large party, fights, etc).

I guess it is fireworks. They're just so loud they sound like gunshots to me.
