Most top talent wouldn't take an Atlanta offer. Once you relo to Atlanta, you're locked out of the high cost of living areas forever.

I think that Boston/Suffolk Downs is very much a forerunner for the new HQ. Having 160 acres of green space less than 10 miles from a tech hub like Cambridge/Boston is a very unique proposition.

Yep - Amazon requires high skilled employees to sign non-compete agreements. In MA, they are enforceable.

A) We weren't talking about Amazon, were we? No.
B) Non-competes are ignored left, right, and center every single day in Mass. Not worth the paper they're printed on.

Still think that Chicago has a strong chance. Its cost-of-living is not nearly as prohibitive as Boston's, and it has one of the most extensive mass transit systems in the US (behind only NYC)..

Why is that?

We have non competes at my company, but I've also heard, multiple times, exactly what you just stated.

Courts don't back them unless they are super targeted. Broad ones get tossed out for distance, or being too broad field wise, or how they define a competitor.

A company doesn't want to be known for enforcing them since it will scare off talent.

Those same companies are poaching talent from competitors, so why they may have them themselves, they don't want competition enforcing theirs either.

Plus, they're expensive to enforce for little gain (unless IP was taken, but that's really a different issue).
