Do you have a Boston Accent? (fit in, to buy, living in)

I grew up in Brighton, JP and then Dot. I didn’t realize I had an accent till I joined the Army after HS in the 80s and people told me I talked funny. Since then I’ve been to a lot of places but got married and settled down in the D.C. area. So it’s been 20+years since I’ve lived in Massachusetts and my accent is completely gone except when I go back to visit family and friends. After a few beers I’m back into that’s wicked pissa mode.

Yeah i guess so. Comes out more around my friends.

I really wish the use of wicked, and the smaht etc... would stop when advertising something in MA.
It makes me never want to buy said product.

I never thought I did, until people in New York pointed it out.. there are some things that Bostonians say that stray away from the traditional 'dropping the r sound'. To me I dont have a Boston accent, but to all my New York friends.. I do. Lol. (Im 21-25 yrs old).

For Example:

Broom: I pronounce Brum
Room: I pronounce rahm/rum.
About: Ah-boat
Iron: eye-uhn
Boards: Boahds... but Board is the only word I drop the r on.
Then I say traditional New England things like Wicked, Super!, Dunkies, Eastie, Southie, The T in every city I visit even though its called the Metro/Train/etc, and even though Im from the suburbs I always say im from Boston.


However, my dad is from Dorchester and his accent is beyond thick. Try and hear him say the number four over the phone, it never ends well... and the poor person on the other side of the phone trying to figure what number is "foah"

I had a funny interaction with customer service years ago. I was trying to troubleshoot my internet modem and the rep was asking what model router I had. I kept saying it is a Netgeaa 1200. They kept telling me that no such router exists. I told him i was reading it right from the box N E T G E A R. He kindly said, sir that spells Netgear.

No, but I didn't grow up in MA, anyway. Some parts of New England are relatively unaccented...

Born then raised in DOT, left for the South Shore at 35 in 83...yea it’s thicka den buddamilk.

Been living in the Deep South for years...people still ask where I’m from.
